In the early sixties, Northern pop groups were the major force in British music. Once Merseybeat exploded on the scene, record label executives scoured the north of England in hopes of discovering 'the next Beatles' for their own labels. Since Manchester was close to Liverpool, it was naturally one of the first cities mined for talent. As a result, Glyn Geoffrey Ellis was one of those Mancunians who was first elevated to national pop stardom and, as Wayne Fontana, he would enjoy transatlantic fame, backed by The Mindbenders with The Game Of Love. When that partnership split in late 1965, Fontana pursued a successful solo career and one that highlighted his own song writing. His numerous visits to the BBC reflected his wider popularity and produced a handsome amount of sessions that document his journey from those early chart-topping days to his cult solo singles and a final broadcast session in October 1968.
