The emergence of Felice Rosser’s FaithNYC reveals another facet of the seemingly infinite diamond of Black American music. Born in Detroit, she experienced Motown, the 1967 riots, Funkadelic, The MC5, The Stooges and The New York Dolls before moving to New York City for college. Blown away by Television at CBGB’s, she became part of the scene, befriending Samo— Jean Michel Basquiat’s tag at that time—and starting to write songs and play bass. Inspired by punk’s DIY attitude, Rock & Roll, Funk, Free Jazz, Dub, Reggae and the new Hip Hop scene all became part of her musical language. She was the bass player in Brooklyn’s all-female reggae band Sistren before she formed FaithNYC, which became part of the Black Rock Coalition.
The nine-track digital release of the album Love Is a Wish Away by Felice Rosser’s FaithNYC caused quite a stir. Title track ‘Love Is a Wish Away’ garnered nearly 400,000 hits on Spotify. It was hailed as one of the best records of the year by Boston’s legendary new wave DJ, Oedipus., and was played by Iggy Pop and Huey Morgan on BBC Radio 6. By popular demand, the album will be released on CD on May 15th by Creation Youth, Alan McGee’s exciting new UK label with Youth from Killing Joke.
Pulsating rock, cool soul, bubbling reggae The album was produced by guitarist Justin Adams, who’s played with Robert Plant, Jah Wobble and Sinead O’Connor. He produced Rachid Taha, Suad Massi and Tinariwen, and also plays guitar on Love Is a Wish Away. In his words, Felice’s “commanding, muscular voice” reminds him of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Lucy Sante seconds that emotion and describes Felice’s unique vocal styling as “profound … with such a depth of emotional experience that it seems to express multiple lives.’
Percussionist and partner Fin Hunt joins her on the LP’s highly personal songs, from the addictive R&B bassline-driven title track to the dub and jazz echoes in ‘Love In a Silent Way’. Heartfelt ‘Eagle Street’ and ‘Can I Make It Up to You’ are elegiac, while ‘Everything Is All Around You’ and ‘Overpass’ are flat-out, gutsy Rock’n’Roll. ‘Climbing All the Way to Zion’ is dedicated to her great grandfather, as a young man walking up the road in Milledgeville, Georgia.
