The X-Men were a jam-band formed in 1990 by saxophonist Branford Marsalis and guitarist Kevin Eubanks around the time that the former was guesting with the Grateful Dead. The perennial problem with jam-bands is they give extensive solo space to players who aren't up to it. With the X-Men that's not a problem. Kevin Eubanks is channelling his inner Hendrix, Jeff 'Tain' Watts has absolutely nothing to learn from John Bonham, Robert Hurst is solid and funky and Branford produces a seemingly endless fountain of ideas. To think that just an hour later he was doing it all again as an honoured guest of Jerry Garcia and the boys! Performed on December 31st 1990 at the Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland, California and broadcast on Syndicated Radio.
Branford Marsalis – saxophone; Jeff 'Tain' Watts – drums; Robert Hurst – contrabass; Kevin Eubanks – Guitar.
