2010 marked the 70th birthday of John Lennon. To celebrate this man, his music and ideals the English composer/arranger Colin Towns arranged Lennon's music for the celebrated NDR Bigband in Hamburg. The sweep of musical ideas are wide. From 'Revolution' to 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds/I Want You (She's So Heavy)' through 'Woman' to 'Tomorrow Never Knows', the musical journey is now and fresh.
As with Towns' previous CD releases showcasing his arranging skills, he creates a world that would not normally be considered for a big band. His former albums such as Frank Zappa's Hot Licks & Funny Smells for the NDR Bigband show his own individual approach to other composer's work whilst writing for specific musicians and taking the audience somewhere new and special.
With this new recording the NDR Bigband delivers a treasure trove of wonderful playing. From Fiete Felsch's beautiful playing of the bass flute and Ingolf Burkhardt on flugelhorn creating very special emotions, to the ear catching sounds of Reiner Winterschladen and Vladyslav Sendecki or guests Alan Skidmore and drummer Gary Husband, every member of the band makes this recording a world of its own.
