Aside from the famed BBC sessions dating from 1972, there is little evidence of the phenomenal power unleashed at the hands of McPhee, Cruickshank and Pustelnik
in their formative years from 1970/71. It was an incredibly fertile period for a band whose credentials had already been carved into stone by blues legend; John Lee Hooker, but whose legacy was just beginning to be written by their own hand. Live on stage, they were a formidable force, respected by the Rolling Stones and the Pretty Things, and embraced by the emerging punk generation - “Our music is often so basic that people miss the point. It should be a spontaneous reflection of the musicians’ emotions on the night.” It is those words from Tony McPhee that made The Groundhogs such an immensely influential band amongst their peers, and also stamped them with the authenticity that rock ‘n’ roll was built on.
